When to worry about indigestion with gastritis

Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. It may cause upper-abdominal burning or discomfort, early fullness, nausea, bloating, or reduced appetite. Alcohol, anti-inflammatory pain medicines, and infection can all be relevant, but indigestion by itself does not identify the cause.

Notice whether pain is linked to meals, whether it wakes you, and whether symptoms improve or worsen after stopping a suspected trigger. A healthcare professional may review medicines, test for infection, or investigate another source when symptoms persist.

Use a symptom diary and choose gentle, smaller meals while arranging advice. Avoid alcohol and any food or medicine that clearly aggravates the burning. Do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance, and ask a pharmacist about suitable antacid options if you already take other medicines or have kidney, liver, or heart problems.

Get urgent care if you vomit blood, pass black or tarry stools, develop severe abdominal pain, feel faint, or cannot keep fluids down. Chest pain, breathing difficulty, sweating, or pain spreading beyond the abdomen should be treated as an emergency. Arrange a timely appointment for unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, or symptoms that do not settle.
