When to worry about indigestion with acid reflux

Short answer
Indigestion is a very common presentation of Acid Reflux, but seek care for persistent, severe, or unusual symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Reflux may cause upper-abdominal discomfort and burning.
- Track
- Meals, position, triggers, pain, and bowel changes.
- Emergency sign
- Severe chest pain with breathlessness needs emergency help.
How acid reflux causes indigestion
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the food pipe. Irritation can cause burning, sour fluid, upper-abdominal discomfort, bloating, belching, or an unpleasant taste. Symptoms may follow meals, lying down, or bending over. Indigestion can have other causes too, so a change in pattern or symptoms that do not settle should be assessed rather than self-labelled.
What may help
Keep meals moderate, remain upright after eating, and notice foods or drinks that trigger symptoms. Avoid smoking and limit late meals if they worsen reflux. Take medicines only as directed on their label or by a clinician, and keep a brief record of timing, triggers, pain, and bowel changes to discuss at an appointment.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for indigestion that is persistent, recurrent despite treatment, or accompanied by difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, anaemia symptoms, or a new change in bowel habits. Seek emergency help for severe chest pain, fainting, sweating, or breathlessness, especially if pain spreads to the arm, jaw, or back.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether another digestive cause should be considered, and how long self-care or treatment should be tried. Mention all medicines, including pain relievers, and ask which warning signs require urgent assessment.
