When should you worry about inability to bear weight with septic arthritis?

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint. Pain can become severe with even small movements, and the joint may be warm and swollen. Fever, chills, or feeling unusually unwell can occur, but their absence does not safely exclude the condition. Rapid assessment matters because joint infection can damage the joint.

Stop trying to walk on the affected side until a clinician has advised you. Rest it in a comfortable position, use a mobility aid if one has been prescribed, and keep the area supported. Do not wait for the joint to become visibly red. Do not massage, stretch, or force the joint or tendon while the injury is being assessed.

Seek emergency care now for a visibly deformed limb, an open wound near the injury, a foot that is cold, pale, blue, or numb, rapidly increasing swelling, or pain that is severe and uncontrolled. Seek urgent same-day care for new inability to bear weight, rapidly worsening symptoms, fever with a painful swollen joint, or symptoms after a significant fall or impact.

Ask what examination or imaging is needed, whether you should remain fully non-weight-bearing, how to protect the septic arthritis while waiting, and which changes should trigger emergency review. Also ask when movement, physiotherapy, and gradual weight-bearing can safely begin.
