Short answer

Seek medical advice when hip pain with hip impingement is persistent, worsening, limits walking, or is joined by sudden severe pain, fever, weakness, or inability to bear weight.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common presentation
Most people with Hip Impingement notice hip pain.
Pain location
Often the groin or front of the thigh.
Urgent warning
Inability to bear weight needs prompt assessment.

What hip pain can mean

Hip Pain is a common presentation of Hip Impingement. The shape or position of the hip joint can cause the bones to pinch soft tissues during movements such as bending, turning, or bringing the knee toward the chest. Discomfort may be felt in the groin, front of the thigh, or sometimes the buttock. Clicking, stiffness, or reduced hip movement can occur too.

Pain alone does not show how serious the problem is. A clinician considers how the pain began, which movements trigger it, whether it affects sleep or daily activities, and whether there was an injury. Other hip, back, muscle, or nerve problems can produce similar symptoms.

What to do now

Reduce activities that repeatedly reproduce the pinch, but keep gentle movement within a comfortable range. Avoid forcing deep squats, twisting, or prolonged positions that clearly increase symptoms. Short walks may be reasonable if they do not increase pain afterward. Note the location, triggers, duration, and effect on walking, sleep, and work.

Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms keep returning, gradually restrict movement, or do not settle with activity changes. Assessment may include hip movement and strength checks, with imaging considered when the examination or history calls for it.

When to seek care

Get prompt medical review for pain that is steadily worsening, interferes with normal walking, repeatedly wakes you, or follows a significant fall or twist. Seek urgent care for sudden severe hip pain, inability to stand or bear weight, a visibly deformed joint, fever with a hot or swollen hip, new leg weakness or numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These features can signal an injury, infection, or nerve problem needing rapid assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which movements should I temporarily avoid? Could my back or another joint be contributing? Do I need imaging or physiotherapy? What symptoms should make me seek urgent care? When should I return if the pain does not improve? Bring a list of medicines and a brief record of triggers, activity limits, and changes over time.

Questions people ask

Can hip impingement cause pain during sitting?

Yes. Sitting with the hip bent for a long time can bring on groin or front-of-hip discomfort in some people.

Should I stop all exercise?

Usually, avoid only the movements that provoke symptoms and keep gentle, comfortable movement unless a clinician advises otherwise.
