Why heavy bleeding matters

Postpartum haemorrhage means excessive blood loss after birth. It can begin soon after delivery or appear later, and it may be related to the uterus not tightening, placental tissue remaining, or a tear in the birth canal. Warning symptoms include dizziness, faintness, pale or clammy skin, weakness, breathlessness, confusion and a pounding heartbeat.

Act without delay

Lie down while help is arranged, keep warm, and have someone stay with you. Use a pad if possible so clinicians can see the bleeding, but do not delay the call to measure it.

Emergency assessment is needed for fainting, collapse, confusion, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a racing heartbeat, or bleeding that quickly soaks pads. Even if the flow slows, contact the maternity team urgently because blood loss can recur and the cause needs treatment.
