When to worry about heartburn with gastritis

Heartburn is a common presentation of Gastritis. Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining, while heartburn usually describes burning that rises behind the breastbone. They can occur together, although the two symptoms do not always come from the same process.

Seek assessment if discomfort is persistent, changes in character, or is accompanied by upper abdominal tenderness, reduced appetite, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. Medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers can irritate the stomach, so mention all medicines and supplements.

Eat modest portions and remain upright after meals. Keep notes about food, alcohol, smoking, painkillers, and symptom timing. Avoid taking additional anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has advised that they are appropriate for you.

A pharmacist can discuss short-term symptom relief, while a doctor can decide whether you need tests or prescription treatment. Do not rely on repeated over-the-counter courses if symptoms keep returning.

Get emergency help for chest pressure or pain with sweating, breathlessness, nausea, faintness, or pain travelling to the arm, jaw, back, or neck. Heartburn should not be used to explain away these symptoms.

Seek prompt care for vomited blood, black stools, severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or inability to swallow. Book a routine review when symptoms persist, recur frequently, or disturb sleep despite treatment.

Ask whether gastritis, reflux, medicine irritation, or another condition best explains the pattern. Ask whether any medicine should be changed, whether testing is needed, and which warning signs require emergency care.
