When to worry about headache with generalised anxiety disorder

Most people with Generalised Anxiety Disorder notice headache as part of muscle tension, poor sleep, jaw clenching, or a prolonged stress response. The discomfort may feel like pressure or a tight band and can become more noticeable during anxious periods. Headache can also have a separate cause, such as dehydration, a viral illness, migraine, eyesight strain, or frequent use of pain medicine.

A familiar headache that improves with rest, fluids, regular meals, and an agreed treatment plan is less concerning than one that is new or clearly different. Anxiety can make pain feel more threatening, so describe the pattern rather than trying to identify the cause from the pain alone.

Record when the headache starts, where it is, how it feels, how long it lasts, and what happens alongside it. Note sleep, meals, fluids, caffeine, stress, screen use, and any medicine taken. Keep fluids nearby, eat at usual times, relax your shoulders and jaw, and take breaks from close screen work.

Use pain relief only as directed on its label or by a clinician. Repeated or frequent use can itself contribute to ongoing headache, so discuss a pattern of regular use with a pharmacist or doctor. Do not stop prescribed anxiety medicine suddenly without medical advice.

Call emergency services if the headache reaches maximum intensity suddenly, follows a significant head injury, or occurs with weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a seizure, or new vision loss. Urgent assessment is also needed with fever and a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a new headache during pregnancy or soon after giving birth.

Arrange a medical appointment if headaches keep returning, are becoming more frequent or intense, wake you from sleep, change your usual pattern, or do not settle with your usual measures. Seek earlier advice if you have another medical condition or take medicines that affect clotting.
