When to worry about a headache with dehydration

Losing fluid through sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or not drinking enough can affect circulation and irritate pain-sensitive tissues. Thirst, a dry mouth, darker urine, tiredness, dizziness, and headache may occur together. Headache alone cannot confirm dehydration. Ongoing losses, kidney problems, diabetes, pregnancy, or medicines that affect fluid balance can make assessment more important.

If you are awake and able to drink, take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Continue replacing fluids while addressing vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure, or fever. Rise slowly if dizzy and rest somewhere cool. Do not force large amounts at once, and ask a clinician which fluids are appropriate if you have heart or kidney disease. Track urine, alertness, and whether the headache eases.

Call emergency services for fainting, severe confusion, seizure, inability to wake, signs of shock, or a sudden severe headache. Seek same-day care if you cannot keep fluids down, have very little or no urine, become increasingly weak, feel dizzy when standing, or have ongoing heavy fluid loss. A headache that does not improve after rehydration, or that is new and unusually intense, also needs medical review.

Ask which rehydration drink is suitable, whether your medicines should be reviewed during fluid loss, and how much monitoring you need. Describe the likely cause of dehydration, urine changes, vomiting or diarrhoea, heat exposure, and any heart, kidney, or metabolic condition.
