When to worry about a headache after concussion

After a head impact, headache may occur with dizziness, light sensitivity, nausea, slower thinking, or tiredness. Symptoms can fluctuate with activity and screen use. A headache that is steadily worsening, feels very different, or appears with a change in behaviour can signal a more serious injury. The presence of headache does not by itself show how severe the injury is.

Follow the discharge advice you were given, pace physical and mental activity, and return gradually to usual tasks as symptoms allow. Avoid alcohol and activities that could cause another head impact until a clinician says they are safe. Have a responsible adult check on you if advised. Record pain changes, vomiting, alertness, vision, balance, and medicines taken.

Call emergency services for loss of consciousness, a seizure, trouble waking, severe confusion, slurred speech, new weakness or numbness, unequal pupils, or fluid or blood from the nose or ears. Go urgently for a headache that keeps worsening, repeated vomiting, new double vision, or difficulty walking. Arrange prompt review if symptoms are not improving, prevent sleep or daily tasks, or return after activity.

Ask when you can return to work, driving, exercise, and screens; which pain medicines are suitable; and what symptom changes require immediate help. Share the timing and force of the injury, any loss of consciousness, blood-thinning medicine, and all symptoms since the event.
