When to worry about headache with allergic rhinitis

Headache is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis. Nasal swelling, congestion, facial pressure, poor sleep and muscle tension can occur together during an allergy flare. A headache may instead reflect migraine, viral illness, dehydration, medication overuse or another sinus problem. Fever, marked facial swelling or a change from your usual pattern makes a clinical assessment more useful.

Record when the pain starts, where it is felt, how long it lasts, and whether congestion, sneezing, light sensitivity or nausea accompany it. Rest, drink fluids and follow the allergy treatment plan prescribed for you. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicine without advice, because frequent use can maintain headaches. Arrange review if symptoms disturb sleep, work or ordinary activity.

Call emergency services for a thunderclap headache, new weakness or speech difficulty, loss of consciousness, seizure, severe confusion, sudden vision loss, stiff neck with fever, or difficulty breathing. Seek same-day advice for headache after a head injury, persistent vomiting, worsening facial swelling, severe eye pain, or pain that keeps escalating despite usual measures.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy-related pressure or another headache type, which nasal treatments are appropriate, and how often pain relief can be used. Mention vision changes, vomiting, fever, medication use and any personal or family history of migraine.
