Short answer

Frequent Urination is a very common presentation of Type 1 Diabetes; thirst, vomiting, deep breathing, or confusion make urgent care necessary.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical clue
Frequent, larger-volume urine may occur with thirst when glucose is high.
Emergency clues
Vomiting, deep breathing, confusion, or severe drowsiness need urgent help.

Why it happens

When blood glucose rises, the kidneys draw extra water into urine. This can cause frequent, larger-volume urination and marked thirst. In type 1 diabetes, a shortage of insulin can allow ketones to build up. Early warning features include nausea, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, fruity-smelling breath, or faster and deeper breathing. Frequency alone does not show what is causing it, so glucose and ketone checks are useful when advised in your diabetes plan.

What to do

Follow your personal sick-day plan and check glucose as instructed. Check ketones when your care team has advised this, particularly during illness or when glucose is high. Keep taking insulin unless your diabetes team gives different instructions, and sip fluids if you can. Contact your diabetes team if readings remain high, ketones appear, you cannot keep fluids down, or frequent urination is new and unexplained.

When urgent help is needed

Go to emergency care for vomiting that prevents drinking, worsening abdominal pain, deep or laboured breathing, confusion, fainting, severe drowsiness, or suspected diabetic ketoacidosis. Do not drive yourself if you feel confused or faint. New frequent urination with intense thirst and weight loss also deserves prompt clinical review, even without the other warning signs.

Useful questions

Ask which glucose and ketone results require a call, how often to test during illness, how to adjust fluids or insulin under your plan, and where to go outside clinic hours. Confirm which symptoms mean emergency assessment.
