When to worry about frequent urination with prostatitis

Inflammation of the prostate can irritate the bladder and urethra. You may feel an urgent need to pass small amounts of urine, wake at night, or notice discomfort in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower back, or area between the scrotum and anus. Frequency may occur with burning, a weak stream, or difficulty starting. These symptoms can overlap with other urinary problems, so a clinician may need your history, an examination, and urine testing.

Record when you urinate, how much you pass, any pain, fever, blood, or change in your stream, and medicines you take. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them; avoid alcohol and drinks that clearly worsen urgency. Do not start, stop, or share antibiotics. Arrange a review if frequency is persistent, returns after treatment, or interferes with sleep or daily activities.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop fever with chills, become confused or very unwell, or have severe pelvic or back pain. Blood in the urine, vomiting, or rapidly worsening urinary symptoms also warrant prompt assessment. Prostatitis can sometimes need timely treatment, especially when infection is suspected.
