When to worry about frequent urination with prediabetes

Changes in glucose handling can affect thirst and urination, although frequent urination has many other causes. Prediabetes may have no obvious symptoms, so urinary frequency alone cannot establish the reason. Infection, caffeine, medicines, pregnancy, and bladder problems should also be considered. Choose water over sweet drinks, follow your agreed eating and activity plan, and do not start or stop diabetes medicine without advice. Note timing, drinks, urine amount, and any burning or fever.

Seek prompt care for persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, deep or difficult breathing, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for burning urination, fever, back pain, blood in urine, or a sudden marked increase in thirst and urination. These symptoms can signal a problem needing timely treatment.
