When to worry about frequent infections with HIV infection

Frequent Infections is a common presentation of HIV Infection. Repeated infections can occur when the immune system is under strain, but the pattern also depends on the infection type, treatment, other illnesses, and exposure. Infections that are unusually severe, slow to clear, return soon after treatment, or occur in several body areas deserve a review. Frequent infections by themselves do not establish the cause.

Tell your HIV care team about each infection, its symptoms, treatment, and response. Take antiretroviral medicine exactly as prescribed and discuss missed doses, side effects, or difficulty obtaining medicines confidentially with the team. Keep vaccinations and routine appointments up to date when advised. Do not start antibiotics, antifungals, or supplements without checking for interactions.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, new confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, chest pain, or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt review is needed for persistent fever, severe headache, unusual skin or mouth changes, painful swallowing, prolonged diarrhoea, or an infection that is not improving with its prescribed treatment. Contact the care team early if you have stopped or cannot take your HIV medicine.

Ask whether your current treatment and monitoring need review, whether tests can clarify immune function, and how to recognise an infection that needs urgent attention. Ask about prevention, vaccination, medicine interactions, and a clear plan for contacting the team outside routine appointments.
