When to worry about flank pain with kidney stones

Flank Pain is a very common presentation of Kidney Stones. A stone can cause waves of sharp pain as it moves from the kidney towards the bladder; the discomfort may spread towards the groin and may come with nausea or blood in the urine. Pain alone does not show whether a stone is blocking urine flow. Fever or chills with suspected blockage is especially concerning because infection may be trapped behind the obstruction.

Arrange medical assessment if the pain is new, severe, or not settling. Follow the treatment plan you were given, use only recommended pain relief, and sip fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Keep track of urine output, vomiting, fever, and the timing and movement of pain. Do not drive yourself if you are faint or heavily affected by pain medicine.

Use emergency services for flank pain with fever or shaking chills, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent care if you cannot urinate, are vomiting repeatedly, have pain that remains severe despite the advised medicine, or have a single functioning kidney. Pregnancy and known kidney disease also lower the threshold for prompt review.
