When to worry about finger stiffness with rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis can inflame the lining of several joints, often causing stiffness, swelling, warmth, and difficulty making a fist. Both hands or several joints may be involved, and stiffness after rest can be prominent. A change may reflect increased inflammation, strain, or another hand problem; it cannot be interpreted from stiffness alone.

Record when stiffness starts, how long it lasts, which joints swell, and whether grip or fine movements change. Continue prescribed medicines as directed and avoid stopping them suddenly without advice. Use gentle range-of-motion movements that do not increase pain, balance activity with rest, and tell the rheumatology team about a persistent change.

Contact your treating team promptly for increasing swelling, warmth, pain, reduced movement, or stiffness that is interfering with daily tasks. Seek urgent care for a hot, very painful joint with fever or feeling acutely unwell, or for sudden weakness, numbness, colour change, or loss of hand movement. These symptoms can require faster assessment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests active inflammation, how your treatment plan should be monitored, and which hand exercises are suitable. Clarify who to contact during a flare and which symptoms should bypass a routine appointment.
