When to worry about finger stiffness with Dupuytren's contracture

Dupuytren's contracture can form firm cords or nodules in the palm that gradually pull one or more fingers toward the palm. Stiffness may show up as difficulty placing the hand flat on a table, opening the fingers fully, wearing gloves, or reaching into a pocket. A stable, mild change can still be discussed at a routine visit; the pattern over time matters more than one uncomfortable day.

Track which finger is involved, whether the palm feels lumpy or tight, and which tasks have become harder. Use comfortable hand movements within an easy range, and avoid forcing a bent finger straight. A clinician can examine movement and discuss observation, hand therapy, or other options according to function and progression.

Arrange a hand or musculoskeletal assessment if the finger is becoming more bent, you cannot rest the hand flat, daily tasks are changing, or pain or tenderness persists. Seek prompt care after an injury with sudden swelling, marked pain, colour change, numbness, or loss of movement. These features may need assessment for a problem beyond the contracture.

Ask which cord or joint is limiting movement, how your hand function should be monitored, and which exercises are appropriate. You can also ask what change would make the next review sooner and whether a hand specialist or therapist would add value.
