When to worry about fever with mumps

For a baby, a person with a weakened immune system, or someone who is pregnant, contact a clinician promptly when fever occurs or the illness changes.

Fever is a very common presentation of Mumps. It can occur alongside feeling unwell, tiredness, headache, and tender swelling near the jaw or in front of the ears as the body responds to the viral infection.

A fever that is uncomfortable is not automatically an emergency. The more useful guide is the whole picture: alertness, breathing, drinking, urine output, pain, and whether symptoms are steadily worsening.

Rest, offer regular fluids, and choose soft foods if jaw swelling makes chewing sore. Small, frequent sips may be easier when appetite is low. Keep a note of the temperature and changes in symptoms so you can describe the illness clearly if you need advice.

Use fever medicine only as directed on the label or by a clinician. Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers with a viral illness. Follow any isolation advice from your healthcare team to reduce spread to others.

Contact a clinician the same day if fever persists and the person is not improving, cannot keep fluids down, urinates much less than usual, has increasing facial swelling or pain, or develops marked drowsiness. Seek urgent assessment for severe abdominal pain, severe testicular pain or swelling, or sudden hearing changes.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, loss of consciousness, a seizure, confusion, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. These warning signs need assessment without waiting to see whether the temperature settles.

Ask whether the symptoms fit mumps, which pain or fever medicine is suitable for the person's age and medical history, and which changes should prompt a review. If there is ear, abdominal, or testicular pain, mention when it started and whether it is worsening.
