When to worry about fever with gastroenteritis

Fever is a common presentation of Gastroenteritis. This inflammation of the stomach and intestines often brings watery diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and reduced appetite. Fever may accompany an infection, while the biggest immediate concern can be fluid loss.

Look at the whole picture: alertness, thirst, dizziness when standing, urine output, and the ability to drink. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with significant health conditions may need earlier advice because dehydration can develop more quickly.

Sip water or oral rehydration fluid frequently rather than drinking a large amount at once. If vomiting settles, gradually increase fluids and eat small portions of simple food when hungry. Rest, wash hands with soap, and avoid sharing towels while symptoms continue.

Check temperature with a consistent method and note changes in vomiting, stools, and urine. Follow the label for fever medicine. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before taking medicine that stops diarrhoea, particularly when fever, blood, or severe abdominal pain is present.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or an inability to drink. Call emergency services if the person is difficult to wake, collapses, or has breathing difficulty.

Arrange prompt review when fever is worsening, symptoms are not easing, or diarrhoea is unusually frequent. Tell the clinician about recent travel, sick contacts, suspicious food, pregnancy, and medicines, as these details can affect assessment.
