When to worry about fever with a common cold

Short answer
Fever is a common presentation of Common Cold. Arrange medical advice if it is severe, lasts longer than expected, returns after improvement, or occurs with breathing difficulty, confusion, or dehydration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the pattern
A common cold can cause a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and sometimes fever. Symptoms should gradually become easier. A fever that reappears after you were improving, or a new worsening cough with chest discomfort, may point to another infection or complication and merits assessment.
Supportive care
Rest and drink regularly; warm fluids may soothe a sore throat. Check your temperature and note breathing, alertness, and urine output. Follow package directions for any suitable fever medicine, and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition. Avoid combining products that contain the same pain-relieving ingredient.
When to contact a clinician
Seek prompt advice if fever is not settling, keeps returning, or leaves you too weak to drink and function. Get urgent help for shortness of breath, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, a stiff neck, or signs of serious dehydration. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity may need advice sooner.
Questions to take with you
Could these symptoms be influenza, COVID-19, or another infection? Which fever treatment fits my medicines and health conditions? What breathing changes should prompt urgent care? When can I safely return to work, school, or usual activities?
