When to worry about fever with chikungunya

Chikungunya commonly begins with a sudden fever and marked joint pain. Headache, muscle aches, rash, tiredness, and joint swelling may also occur. Fever may improve while joint symptoms continue. A worsening overall condition, new neurological symptoms, or difficulty drinking should not be attributed to the usual course without medical advice.

Rest, drink small amounts often, and keep a record of temperature, pain, rash, and urine output. Protect yourself from mosquito bites while fever is present so mosquitoes do not spread infection to others. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain or fever medicine is safe for you, especially before taking anti-inflammatory medicines if dengue has not been excluded.

Arrange prompt assessment if fever remains severe, returns after settling, or prevents drinking and normal activity. Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or bleeding from the nose, gums, vomit, or stool. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic illness may need earlier review.
