When to worry about fever with chickenpox

Chickenpox often causes an itchy blistering rash with fever, tiredness, and reduced appetite. New spots may appear while older ones crust. Fever that settles as the illness improves is usually monitored at home, but a new rise after improvement can signal a complication. Red, increasingly painful, swollen, or draining spots may be infected.

Offer frequent fluids and light foods if wanted. Keep nails short, use gentle cooling measures, and avoid scratching to reduce skin damage. Check alertness, urination, breathing, and the appearance of the rash. Use only age-appropriate fever relief advised by a pharmacist or clinician; avoid aspirin in children and ask before using any medicine.

Seek same-day advice for fever that continues, returns, or is accompanied by worsening cough, ear pain, severe headache, or a rash that becomes hot and painful. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, unusual difficulty waking, repeated vomiting, a stiff neck, seizure, or signs of severe dehydration. Contact a clinician early if the person is pregnant, very young, or immunocompromised.
