When to worry about fever with cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. The area may be warm, swollen, tender, and red; the edge can expand as inflammation progresses. Fever, chills, or unusual tiredness can occur. A temperature that remains high after treatment begins, or redness that continues to spread, may indicate that the infection needs prompt reassessment.

Take the prescribed antibiotic as instructed and keep the affected area clean. Rest and drink fluids unless you have been told to restrict them. Elevate an arm or leg when practical, and mark or photograph the edge of redness so changes are easier to describe. Do not squeeze blisters or apply unadvised creams over broken skin.

Arrange same-day assessment if fever persists, the red or swollen area enlarges, pain becomes intense, or you feel increasingly unwell. Go to emergency care for confusion, fainting, rapid breathing, severe weakness, purple or blistering skin, or pain that seems much greater than the skin changes. Extra caution is needed with diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.
