When to worry about fatigue with Long COVID

Short answer
Fatigue is a very common presentation of Long COVID, but seek medical advice when it worsens, limits daily life, or comes with warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How Long COVID fatigue can feel
Long COVID fatigue may feel like a heavy lack of energy, poor concentration, or exhaustion after small physical or mental tasks. Some people notice post-exertional worsening: symptoms increase after activity and may take time to settle. Sleep may not restore energy fully.
Fatigue can overlap with breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, pain, headache, changes in smell or taste, and low mood. These symptoms can have other causes, so a new or changing pattern deserves assessment rather than being automatically labelled Long COVID.
Managing energy safely
Plan essential tasks around your most capable times and break activities into small parts. Alternate activity with planned rest, increase effort gradually only when symptoms remain stable, and avoid pushing through a marked crash. Keep notes on exertion, sleep, food, dizziness, and delayed symptom changes.
Arrange a clinical review if fatigue is stopping work, study, personal care, or gentle movement. A clinician can check medicines, sleep, mood, heart and breathing symptoms, and other conditions that may be treatable.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden weakness on one side. Get prompt advice for a racing or irregular heartbeat with dizziness, or a rapid decline in your ability to manage basic activities.
Contact a clinician soon if fatigue is steadily worsening, follows a new infection, causes repeated crashes, or is accompanied by unexplained fever, significant weight change, or persistent low mood.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit a post-viral pattern, what other causes should be checked, and how to pace activity safely. Discuss sleep quality, dizziness on standing, palpitations, breathlessness, mood, and a plan for reviewing progress.
