When should you worry about fatigue if you have hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C may cause low energy through liver inflammation and the wider effects of an ongoing infection. Sleep problems, low mood, anaemia, thyroid problems, other illnesses, and treatment side effects can also contribute. Fatigue does not show how much liver injury is present, and a clinician may need symptoms, an examination, and blood tests to put it in context.

Keep a simple note of energy levels, sleep, meals, alcohol intake, medicines, and symptoms such as nausea or abdominal discomfort. Break demanding tasks into smaller parts, rest before exhaustion, maintain fluids, and aim for regular meals. Book a review if tiredness is lasting, worsening, or stopping normal activities. Take antiviral treatment exactly as prescribed unless your treatment team advises otherwise.

Get urgent help for yellow eyes or skin, confusion, vomiting that prevents drinking, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe abdominal swelling, breathing trouble, or extreme drowsiness. Contact a clinician promptly for rapidly worsening fatigue, fever, new severe pain, or a noticeable reduction in urination.

Ask whether your medicines, liver function, blood count, sleep, or mood could be contributing. Ask which tests are appropriate, how to manage activity safely, and what to do if nausea or poor appetite makes treatment difficult.
