When should you worry about fatigue if you have hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B can affect energy while the immune system responds to the virus or while the liver is inflamed. Tiredness may occur with poor appetite, nausea, discomfort under the right ribs, or aching joints. Fatigue can also have another cause, such as disrupted sleep, anaemia, a medicine effect, or an unrelated illness, so its presence does not establish the cause.

Record when the fatigue began, whether it is changing, how it affects ordinary activities, and any accompanying symptoms. Pace tasks, rest between activities, drink fluids if you can, and choose small nourishing meals. Arrange a clinical review if tiredness continues, interferes with work or self-care, or appears after a change in treatment. Do not stop prescribed hepatitis treatment without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for yellow skin or eyes, new confusion or unusual sleepiness, repeated vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, dark urine with pale stools, bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your clinician promptly if fatigue is rapidly worsening or comes with fever, significant pain, or very little urine.

Ask whether your fatigue could reflect liver inflammation, whether blood tests or medication review are needed, and which symptoms should prompt same-day help. Ask how to balance rest with gentle activity and whether family members or household contacts need hepatitis B testing or vaccination advice.
