When should you worry about fatigue if you have burnout?

Short answer
Fatigue is a very common presentation of Burnout. Arrange a health review when exhaustion persists, affects basic tasks, or comes with low mood, sleep disruption, physical symptoms or thoughts of self-harm.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Burnout and exhaustion
Burnout is linked with prolonged work or caregiving stress and may involve emotional exhaustion, detachment and reduced effectiveness. Sleep may not restore your energy, while headaches, muscle tension, stomach symptoms and concentration difficulty can add to the burden. Fatigue can also occur with depression, anxiety, thyroid problems, anaemia, infection or medicine effects, so a broader assessment may be helpful.
Steps that can help now
Tell someone you trust what has changed and book an appointment if functioning is slipping. Describe your sleep, workload, mood, appetite, alcohol or stimulant use and physical symptoms. Reduce avoidable demands, take genuine breaks, protect a regular sleep routine and use workplace or caregiving support where available. Small adjustments are useful, but persistent exhaustion should not be managed by willpower alone.
When support is urgent
Seek emergency help if you may harm yourself, cannot stay safe, feel confused, have severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty or suddenly lose strength or speech. Contact a clinician promptly when you are unable to work, eat, wash or sleep normally, or when fatigue is rapidly worsening. Urgent review can also help distinguish burnout from depression, a physical illness or medication effects.
Questions for an appointment
Could a physical or mental health condition be adding to burnout? Would blood tests or a medication review help? What changes to work or caregiving are reasonable while I recover? How can I access talking therapy or crisis support if my mood worsens?

Questions people ask
How can I tell burnout fatigue from ordinary tiredness?
Burnout fatigue tends to persist, feel linked to ongoing stress and affect concentration, motivation or daily functioning. A clinician can check for overlapping medical or mental health causes.
Should I keep working through burnout?
Pushing through severe exhaustion can worsen functioning and safety. Discuss temporary workload changes, leave or other support with a clinician and the people responsible for your work or care.
