When should you worry about fatigue if you have anaemia?

Short answer
Fatigue is a very common presentation of Anaemia. Contact a clinician when tiredness is new, worsening or limiting activity, and seek urgent help for breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, confusion or heavy bleeding.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Underlying issue
- Anaemia can have causes ranging from blood loss to vitamin deficiency or chronic illness.
- Treatment caution
- Use iron or other supplements only as advised for your type of anaemia.
- Urgent clue
- Breathlessness at rest, chest pain or fainting needs urgent help.
How anaemia causes fatigue
Anaemia means the blood has reduced oxygen-carrying capacity. The body may respond with low energy, reduced exercise tolerance, headaches, dizziness, pale skin or a fast heartbeat. Iron deficiency is one possible cause, but blood loss, vitamin deficiency, chronic illness and inherited conditions can also contribute. Treating the cause is as important as improving the blood count.
Plan a proper assessment
Arrange an appointment if fatigue continues or interferes with work, study, sleep or usual movement. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, mention heavy or unusual bleeding, and note dietary changes, bowel symptoms or breathlessness. Do not start high-dose iron without advice; the correct treatment depends on the type and cause of anaemia. Rest when needed and avoid pushing through dizziness.
Signs requiring urgent care
Get emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, new confusion, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, vomiting blood, black stools or heavy ongoing bleeding. Prompt review is also needed if fatigue worsens quickly, you are pregnant, or dizziness makes walking unsafe. Assessment may include a blood count and tests directed at the suspected cause.

Questions people ask
Will rest cure fatigue from anaemia?
Rest may help you cope, but it does not correct the reduced oxygen-carrying capacity or its cause. Testing and targeted treatment are usually needed.
Why does the cause of anaemia matter?
Different causes require different treatments, and ongoing blood loss or illness can continue unless it is identified and addressed.
