Short answer

Fainting is a very common presentation of Postural Hypotension. Seek urgent help if collapse occurs with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, neurological symptoms, injury, exertion or slow recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Symptoms may begin soon after moving from sitting or lying to standing.
First response
Sit or lie down at the earliest warning.
Review needed
A first or recurrent faint should be discussed with a clinician.

Why standing can trigger symptoms

Postural hypotension means blood pressure falls when moving upright. You may notice dizziness, dimming vision, weakness or fainting soon after standing from a chair or bed. Dehydration, heat, prolonged bed rest and medicines can make the drop more pronounced. A clinician should still confirm the pattern because fainting can arise from heart rhythm problems or other conditions.

Reduce the immediate risk

At the first warning, sit or lie down immediately and avoid trying to walk through it. Rise in stages: move your ankles, sit at the bedside, pause, then stand while holding a stable surface. Drink fluids if this is suitable for you, avoid excessive heat and discuss compression garments or medication changes with a clinician. Keep a record of triggers and symptoms.

Warning signs that change the plan

Emergency assessment is appropriate if you cannot be woken normally, have chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new irregular heartbeat, seizure-like activity, one-sided weakness, speech difficulty or a significant head injury. Arrange prompt review after a first faint, repeated episodes, fainting while exercising or an episode with no warning. Blood pressure measurements before and after standing can help guide the evaluation.

Useful questions

How should I measure my blood pressure at home? Could any prescription or over-the-counter medicine be contributing? Are my fluid and salt instructions appropriate for my other health conditions? When can I safely return to driving or exercise?

Questions people ask

Why do I feel faint after getting out of bed?

Blood can pool in the legs when you stand, and the body may take time to restore blood flow to the brain. Moving slowly and pausing at the bedside can reduce the risk.

Should I change my blood pressure tablets?

Only a clinician should advise a change. Bring your medicine list and symptom record so the timing and dose can be reviewed safely.
