When to worry about facial volume loss with tear trough hollows

Tear trough hollows are depressions along the lower eyelid and upper cheek transition. Reduced soft-tissue fullness, facial structure, skin thickness, shadows, and inherited anatomy can make this area look darker or more sunken. Changes that develop gradually on both sides without discomfort are often an appearance concern. Facial volume can also change with weight fluctuation, ageing, dehydration, or illness, so the surrounding pattern matters.

Compare recent photographs in similar lighting and note whether the change is one-sided, sudden, or linked with weight or illness. Use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and daily broad-spectrum sun protection around—but not in—the eyes. A dermatologist or qualified aesthetic clinician can examine the lower eyelid, cheek support, skin quality, and any swelling before discussing options. Avoid injecting products or using strong treatments close to the eye without an in-person evaluation.

Arrange prompt medical care for rapid or one-sided hollowing, marked swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, a new lump, bruising without a clear cause, or skin that becomes pale, blue, or unusually dark. Seek urgent care for vision loss or change, severe eye pain, double vision, weakness, or facial swelling with breathing difficulty. These warning signs need assessment because they are not explained by a stable cosmetic hollow alone.

Ask whether the change is from volume, pigmentation, shadowing, swelling, or another eye-area problem; whether both sides are affected; which treatments suit your anatomy; and what warning signs should prompt review.
