When to worry about facial swelling with food allergy

A food allergy can trigger a rapid immune reaction after eating or sometimes after contact with the food. Swelling may appear around the eyes, lips, or face, with itching or hives. The reaction can progress to the mouth, tongue, throat, lungs, or circulation. Facial swelling alone can be mild, but there is no reliable way to predict its course from appearance, so new swelling after a suspected trigger needs careful attention.

Stop eating the suspected food and follow your prescribed allergy action plan. If an adrenaline auto-injector has been prescribed and emergency symptoms are present, use it as instructed and call emergency services. Do not drive yourself if you feel weak, dizzy, or short of breath. Keep the food packaging or a record of what was eaten for the medical team.

Call emergency services immediately for noisy or difficult breathing, throat tightness, voice change, trouble swallowing, tongue swelling, repeated vomiting, widespread hives with weakness, pale or clammy skin, confusion, or collapse. Stay with the person, follow the emergency operator's instructions, and do not wait to see whether the swelling settles. A second medical assessment may be needed even if symptoms improve.

Ask which foods should be avoided, how to use an auto-injector, and what symptoms belong in your emergency plan. Discuss how to read ingredient labels, whether close contacts need training, and whether specialist allergy testing is appropriate for identifying a safe long-term plan.
