When to worry about facial swelling with cellulitis

Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Cellulitis. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and soft tissue, often causing warmth, redness, tenderness and swelling. On the face, infection near the eye, nose or mouth deserves particular attention because nearby tissues can be affected. Fever, chills, increasing pain or feeling markedly unwell can indicate that the infection is progressing.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for new facial redness and swelling, especially after a cut, bite, dental problem or skin condition. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and mark the edge of redness only if a clinician has advised monitoring its spread. Tell the clinician about allergies and recent medicines.

Call emergency services for swelling that threatens breathing or swallowing, eye pain or vision change, severe headache, confusion, faintness, or rapid spread across the face. Urgent review is also needed for high fever, severe pain, pus, or deterioration despite treatment. Children, older adults and people with reduced immunity may need earlier assessment when facial symptoms appear.

Ask where the infection appears to be located, how quickly treatment should improve the redness and swelling, and which changes mean you should return. Discuss whether a dental, sinus or skin source needs treatment as well.
