When to worry about facial swelling with angioedema

Facial Swelling is a very common presentation of Angioedema. It is deeper swelling beneath the skin and may affect the eyelids, lips, cheeks, tongue or throat. It can occur with hives and itching, but some forms do not cause a rash. The cause may be an allergy, a medicine, an inherited tendency or another trigger, so the timing and associated symptoms help guide assessment.

If the tongue or throat feels swollen, the voice changes, or breathing becomes difficult, call emergency services at once. Use prescribed emergency medicine exactly as directed. Sit upright if that makes breathing easier, avoid eating or drinking while swallowing is impaired, and stay with the affected person. Record recent foods, medicines, insect stings and earlier episodes for the clinician.

Seek emergency help for noisy breathing, choking, trouble swallowing saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, faintness, severe weakness or widespread allergic symptoms. Arrange prompt medical review for a first episode, repeated episodes, swelling without an obvious trigger, or symptoms after starting a new medicine. Emergency review remains necessary if symptoms improve and then return.

Ask whether your medicines could contribute, whether you need an emergency plan, and which symptoms require immediate treatment. Ask how to distinguish a mild skin episode from airway involvement and whether allergy or specialist assessment is appropriate.
