When to Worry About Excessive Sweating With Heat Exhaustion

Short answer
Excessive Sweating is a common presentation of Heat Exhaustion; move to a cool place and seek urgent help if recovery does not begin or severe symptoms appear.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Stop activity and move to a cool place.
- Emergency signs
- Confusion, collapse, seizure, or inability to drink needs emergency help.
Recognising heat exhaustion
Heat exhaustion can follow time in hot conditions or strenuous activity. Heavy sweating may occur with weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, clammy skin, or thirst. These symptoms reflect difficulty replacing fluid and cooling the body.
Stop exertion and take the situation seriously, especially if symptoms are worsening. Heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke, in which confusion, seizures, collapse, or very hot skin may occur.
What to do now
Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned place, loosen extra clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths or cool air. If they are alert and able to swallow, offer small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Do not leave them alone while symptoms continue.
When to seek emergency care
Call emergency services for confusion, fainting, a seizure, inability to drink, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, or a suspected heatstroke. Get medical help promptly if symptoms are severe, worsening, or fail to improve after cooling and fluids. Do not delay for sweating to stop before seeking help.
