When to worry about excessive burping with hiatus hernia

A hiatus hernia can allow part of the stomach to move through the diaphragm. Reflux and swallowed air may then cause belching, fullness, sour taste, or burning behind the breastbone. Burping can also follow fizzy drinks, eating quickly, chewing gum, or smoking, so the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Arrange a routine appointment if the pattern is new, persistent, worsening, or interfering with meals or sleep. A clinician may review reflux symptoms, medicines, eating habits, and swallowing, then decide whether testing is needed.

Eat smaller meals, slow down while eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Limit foods and drinks that clearly trigger symptoms, especially carbonated drinks, and keep a note of timing, meals, reflux, and bowel changes. Avoid tight clothing around the waist and ask a pharmacist or clinician before starting an acid-reducing medicine, particularly if you take other medicines.

Call emergency services for severe or crushing chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, or pain with sweating or weakness. Seek urgent medical assessment for vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, repeated vomiting, food sticking, painful swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. These signs need assessment even when a hiatus hernia is already known.
