When to worry about earache with tonsillitis

The throat and ear share nerve pathways, so inflamed tonsils can cause pain felt in one or both ears even when the ear itself looks normal. Earache may occur with a sore throat, painful swallowing, swollen tonsils, fever, or tender neck glands.

An ear infection can occur at the same time, so discharge, a new hearing change, or pain when the outer ear is touched deserves examination. Earache is a common presentation of Tonsillitis, but the symptom does not show which condition is responsible on its own.

Take frequent sips of cool or warm fluid and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Rest and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Use pain relief only if suitable for you, following the label and checking with a pharmacist if you take other medicines.

Do not share antibiotics or use leftover prescriptions. If a clinician prescribes treatment, complete it as directed and seek advice if swallowing remains difficult, pain intensifies, or you cannot keep fluids down.

Seek emergency help if you have trouble breathing, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop a muffled voice, cannot open your mouth normally, or have rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. These symptoms can signal a complication requiring immediate care.

Get prompt medical advice for severe one-sided throat or ear pain, persistent fever, dehydration, ear discharge, new hearing loss, a rash, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than easing. Arrange review when symptoms do not improve as expected.

Ask whether the ear needs examination, whether the tonsils show signs needing a throat test, and which pain relief is appropriate. Mention one-sided symptoms, voice change, mouth opening, fluid intake, fever, rash, discharge, and any medicine or antibiotic already taken.
