When to worry about earache with a common cold

A cold can inflame the nose and throat and block the eustachian tube, the passage that helps balance pressure behind the eardrum. Pressure, congestion, and referred throat pain may cause aching or fullness. New discharge, worsening pain, or a clear hearing change can point to a separate ear problem that needs examination.

Rest, drink fluids, and use age-appropriate pain relief according to the label or a clinician's advice. Gentle swallowing can help pressure equalise. Do not put oil, cotton buds, or unprescribed drops into the ear. Keep the ear dry if fluid appears and monitor whether the ache improves as nasal symptoms settle.

Arrange prompt care for severe or increasing pain, fluid or blood from the ear, a new reduction in hearing, persistent vomiting, or symptoms that do not improve as the cold settles. Seek urgent help for swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a child who is difficult to wake.

Ask whether the eardrum and ear canal look healthy, whether congestion is affecting pressure, and which pain medicines are suitable. Share the cold's start, fever or discharge, hearing changes, and any medicines already taken.
