When to worry about difficulty swallowing with tonsillitis

Inflamed tonsils can narrow the throat space and make each swallow sore. Fever, swollen neck glands, a dry mouth, and a rough or muffled voice may occur alongside the throat pain. Symptoms can affect both sides, but severe pain or swelling mainly on one side needs assessment because a collection beside the tonsil can interfere with opening the mouth and swallowing.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink and choose soft, cool foods if they are easier to manage. Rest your voice, avoid smoke, and use only pain or fever medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label directions. Do not try to scrape the tonsils or share leftover antibiotics. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are not settling, keep returning, or prevent normal eating and drinking.

Get emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva and are drooling, feel faint from being unable to drink, or notice rapidly increasing swelling in the mouth or neck.
