When to worry about difficulty swallowing with strep throat

Strep throat can inflame the tonsils and surrounding tissues, making swallowing sore and sometimes difficult. Fever, tender neck glands, and throat redness may occur. A severe one-sided swelling, trouble opening the mouth, drooling, or a changed voice can signal a deeper throat problem that needs urgent assessment.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and rest your throat. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician's instructions. If antibiotics were prescribed, take them exactly as directed and do not share them. Replace fluids regularly, even if each sip is small.

Seek same-day advice if you cannot drink comfortably, symptoms are getting worse, or you have signs of dehydration such as very little urine or marked dizziness. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, drooling because you cannot swallow, choking, a muffled voice, or rapidly increasing throat swelling.

Ask whether testing is needed, which pain relief is appropriate, and how to recognise dehydration or a throat abscess. If antibiotics are prescribed, ask when improvement should begin and what to do if swallowing becomes harder.
