When to worry about difficulty passing urine with a urinary tract infection

Irritation and swelling in the urinary tract can cause burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, hesitancy, or a weaker stream. Difficulty may also occur when infection affects the bladder or prostate. It can overlap with an enlarged prostate, a stone, constipation, or another blockage, so the symptom should not be self-diagnosed.

A clinician may ask about pain, fever, pregnancy, recent procedures, and previous infections. Urine testing can help guide treatment and identify a problem needing faster attention.

Arrange medical advice promptly when urinary difficulty accompanies burning, urgency, cloudy or bloody urine, or lower abdominal pain.
