When to worry about diarrhoea with typhoid fever

Diarrhoea is a common presentation of Typhoid Fever, although bowel symptoms can vary. Fever, headache, weakness, stomach discomfort, and reduced appetite may accompany it. Diarrhoea can remove fluid and salts, while typhoid fever itself can require prescribed treatment. A change in bowel symptoms does not confirm recovery, so follow the treatment plan and monitor your overall condition.

Use an oral rehydration drink or take frequent sips of safe fluids. Eat simple foods as tolerated and rest. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share them. Avoid preparing food for others, wash hands after using the toilet, and tell your clinician about travel, untreated water, or close contacts who are unwell.

Seek same-day medical advice if you pass very little urine, feel faint on standing, cannot keep fluids down, become increasingly weak, or remain feverish or more unwell despite treatment. Emergency care is needed for fainting, confusion, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, blood or black stool, or marked drowsiness. Do not wait for diarrhoea to stop before getting help.
