When to worry about dark patches on skin with ashy dermatosis

Ashy dermatosis can cause grey-brown or ashy-looking patches that may appear on the trunk, arms, neck, or other areas. The patches can be subtle at first and may expand or become more noticeable over time. Their appearance can overlap with other pigment conditions, so photographs and an examination may help clarify what is happening.

Keep a simple record of the affected areas and any change in shade, border, scale, itch, or tenderness. Use fragrance-free moisturiser and protect exposed skin from sunlight, which can deepen contrast between affected and unaffected areas. Avoid applying strong acids, steroid creams, or lightening products without professional advice, because irritation can complicate the assessment.

Arrange an appointment if patches continue to spread, become raised or scaly, develop pain, bleeding, crusting, or marked itch, or appear after a new medicine.
