When to worry about coughing up phlegm with acute bronchitis

Acute bronchitis inflames the breathing tubes, so they produce extra mucus that may be clear, white, yellow, or green. Colour alone does not tell you whether antibiotics are needed. A cough and mucus can linger after other symptoms begin improving, but a clear deterioration deserves assessment.

Drink fluids if you can, rest, avoid tobacco smoke, and use a humidified environment if it feels soothing. Follow label directions for any symptom medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take regular medicines or have asthma, heart disease, or another lung condition. Do not start leftover antibiotics.

Arrange medical advice for breathlessness, chest pain, fever that persists or returns, coughing up blood, dehydration, unusual drowsiness, or symptoms that are steadily worsening. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, or confusion. Babies, older adults, and people with long-term conditions may need earlier review.
