When to worry about chills with sepsis

Most people with Sepsis notice chills or shaking as part of a serious response to infection, but symptoms can vary. Fever or an unusually low temperature, fast breathing, a racing heartbeat, severe pain, clammy skin, confusion, extreme sleepiness, and very little urine are concerning combinations. Sepsis is a medical emergency because the body’s response to infection can impair organs and circulation.

Chills alone do not diagnose sepsis. Concern rises when a person is deteriorating quickly, looks seriously unwell, or has a possible infection in the lungs, urinary system, skin, abdomen, or another site.

If sepsis is possible, seek emergency help immediately and explain that there may be a serious infection. Do not drive yourself if confused, faint, severely weak, or short of breath. Note the suspected infection, when the chills began, temperature readings, breathing changes, urine output, medicines, allergies, and important medical conditions while waiting for help. Keep the person supervised and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty breathing, blue or mottled skin, fainting, seizure, inability to stay awake, severe weakness, or very little urine. Urgent assessment is also needed for rapidly worsening pain, persistent vomiting, cold clammy skin, or a sudden decline after an infection or procedure. Do not wait to see whether another chill passes.

After urgent assessment, ask what infection is suspected, which organ functions need monitoring, what treatment has started, and which changes should be reported immediately. Provide a complete medicine list, allergy history, recent procedures, immune problems, and the timeline of deterioration.
