When to worry about chills with dengue fever

Chills or shivering can accompany the fever and changing temperature of dengue. You may also have headache, muscle or joint aches, nausea, or marked tiredness. The period when fever starts to settle can still be risky, so feeling cooler does not by itself mean the illness has safely passed. Monitor how you feel and watch for new symptoms.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use only fever medicine advised by a clinician. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a healthcare professional specifically tells you to use them, because dengue can increase bleeding risk. Keep track of vomiting, urine output, fever changes, and any bleeding. Arrange medical advice if you cannot drink or symptoms are becoming harder to manage.

Get emergency help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, trouble breathing, faintness, cold clammy skin, confusion, or extreme sleepiness. Seek prompt assessment if you cannot keep fluids down or are passing much less urine. Tell the clinician that dengue is suspected or diagnosed.
