When to worry about chest tightness with acid reflux

Chest Tightness is a common presentation of Acid Reflux. Irritation in the food pipe may create burning or pressure behind the breastbone, sometimes after eating or when lying down. The same area can hurt when the heart or lungs are affected. Relief after an antacid does not prove the cause when the sensation is new or unlike your usual reflux.

Stop exertion and sit upright. Follow your clinician's reflux plan as directed, but do not delay emergency help for warning signs. Note when the tightness began, what you ate, your body position, and whether movement or breathing changes it. Do not drive if you feel faint or unwell.

Call emergency services for crushing or persistent tightness, breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, marked weakness, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Arrange medical review for frequent symptoms, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that keep returning despite your plan.

Ask how to distinguish your reflux pattern from symptoms needing emergency care, whether your medicines need review, and whether swallowing or nighttime symptoms need investigation. Share your triggers, timing, treatments tried, and heart or lung risk factors.
