When to worry about chest pain and heart attack

Short answer
Worry about chest pain when it is new, severe, persistent, or accompanied by warning symptoms; seek emergency help immediately.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

When chest pain needs urgent attention
Treat pressure, squeezing, heaviness, tightness, or pain in the centre of the chest as urgent when it does not settle promptly, returns, or feels different from your usual discomfort. Do not wait to see whether it passes if you are concerned.
How chest pain can relate to a heart attack
Chest Pain is a very common presentation of Heart Attack. A heart attack occurs when part of the heart muscle is not receiving the blood supply it needs. The feeling may spread to an arm, shoulder, neck, jaw, back, or upper abdomen, but it can also remain in the chest.
Chest discomfort has many possible causes, including problems involving muscles, the digestive system, lungs, or the heart. The pattern and associated symptoms matter, but they cannot safely confirm or exclude a heart attack without urgent clinical assessment.
What to do while help is arranged
Call your local emergency service for new or concerning chest pain and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Stop physical activity, sit or lie in a comfortable position, and ask someone to stay with you if possible. Do not drive yourself to hospital.
If you have been given a personal emergency plan or prescribed medicine for chest symptoms, use it only as your clinician instructed. Have your medication list and key medical details available for the emergency team.
Warning symptoms that increase urgency
Seek emergency help immediately for chest pain with shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea, vomiting, fainting, marked weakness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or sudden confusion. Urgency also applies when chest discomfort begins at rest or after only light activity.
Some people having a heart attack notice breathlessness, unusual tiredness, indigestion-like discomfort, or pain away from the chest. These symptoms deserve urgent assessment when they are new, severe, or occur together with a feeling of being unwell.
Questions after urgent assessment
After you have been assessed, ask what may have caused your symptoms, whether you need tests of your heart or lungs, and which changes should prompt an emergency call in the future. Ask for clear instructions about activity, medicines, and follow-up.

Questions people ask
Can heart attack pain feel like indigestion?
It can feel like pressure, burning, fullness, or discomfort in the upper abdomen for some people. New indigestion-like symptoms with breathlessness, sweating, weakness, or chest discomfort need emergency assessment.
Should I wait if chest pain improves?
No. Pain that eases and returns, or pain that was concerning at any point, still needs urgent medical advice. Contact emergency services rather than monitoring it alone.
