When to worry about chest pain if you have gastritis

Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. It can cause upper-abdominal burning, indigestion, nausea, early fullness, or discomfort that seems to rise toward the chest. Meals, alcohol, some medicines, or lying down may affect symptoms, but these patterns do not prove the pain is digestive.

Chest discomfort can also come from the heart, lungs, muscles, or other organs. A new symptom should be considered on its own, especially if it feels heavy, tight, crushing, or unlike your usual stomach symptoms.

Stop strenuous activity and rest. Follow medicines already prescribed for gastritis, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has told you they are suitable. Keep track of food, medicines, position, and timing around symptoms; this can help a clinician distinguish upper digestive discomfort from other causes.

Book a medical review if symptoms keep returning, interfere with eating or sleep, or do not improve with the plan you were given. Do not change prescription treatment without advice.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, unfamiliar, or brought on by activity, particularly with breathlessness, fainting, sweating, nausea, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, sudden weakness, or severe abdominal pain. Do not drive yourself when seriously unwell.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gastritis, whether any medicine could be irritating your stomach, and which symptoms require emergency action. Ask what evaluation is needed if chest discomfort returns despite stomach treatment.
