When should you worry about chest pain if you have acid reflux?

Acid reflux can irritate the food pipe and cause a burning sensation behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, or discomfort after eating or lying down. Heart, lung, and other conditions can feel similar. The location, trigger, and associated symptoms help clinicians assess the cause, but a familiar reflux history does not rule out a new problem.

Sit upright, avoid lying down soon after eating, and follow the reflux plan prescribed for you. Keep track of meals, exertion, body position, and associated symptoms. Do not use leftover heart medicines or someone else’s treatment. Arrange a medical review if symptoms are recurring, worsening, affecting swallowing, or not responding to your usual plan.

Call emergency services for pressure, tightness, squeezing, or severe chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek urgent assessment for pain triggered by exertion, sudden pain with breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, black stools, or trouble swallowing. Do not drive yourself during severe symptoms.
