When to Worry About Chapped Lips With Actinic Cheilitis

Chapped Lips is a common presentation of Actinic Cheilitis. The lower lip may feel persistently dry, rough, scaly, or tight, with less distinct colour or texture at the border between the lip and surrounding skin. Sun exposure is a key contributor, and wind, licking, dehydration, or irritating products can add to discomfort.

Ordinary chapping often settles when irritation is removed. A persistent patch, recurring crust, or area that feels different from the rest of the lip needs an examination because ongoing sun damage can cause abnormal surface changes.

Use a bland lip moisturiser frequently and choose a lip product with sun protection when outdoors. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, avoid licking or peeling the surface, and stop products that sting. Keep a note of how long the area has been changing and whether it cracks, crusts, or bleeds.

Book a dermatology or primary-care assessment if roughness does not settle, keeps returning in the same place, or forms a persistent scab, sore, thickened area, or colour change. Seek prompt care for bleeding without clear irritation, increasing pain, numbness, a lump, or difficulty moving the lip. Do not wait for self-care to resolve a changing lesion.

Ask whether the lip needs a closer examination or biopsy, which products are suitable, how to reduce ultraviolet exposure, and how often the area should be checked.
